ArtPrize is an international art festival that takes place every year in the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The festival features thousands of artists, some from just down the block, some who have come halfway across the world to premiere their art in the hundreds of venues that the city has to offer. During ArtPrize, the city floods with tourists looking to view and vote on their favorite pieces. It is undoubtedly the biggest commercial event of the year for Grand Rapids buisnesses, swelling the potential market for products both legal and illicit.
The number of people who come into the city makes ArtPrize 8 the perfect time to premiere Stories In Blue. Such a massive audience for a piece drawing attention to the realities of human trafficking has undenaible benefits for artists. But while ArtPrize expands our audience, it also massively expands the number of trafficking victims exploited every day in the city by nearly 400%. Our daily performance and visual installation does more than draw attention to the problem of human trafficking - it moves us towards knowledge and change. It rallies attention and will for action that will have actual impact on the vulnerable people whose lives are destroyed by the festival. Partnering with other organizations to provide resources and care, our role as artists in this project is to offer stories that ignite change.
